Dream11 HR interview questions and answers

12 Dream11 HR interview questions with sample answers: why HR asks each one and how to answer. From public candidate reports. Free.

At Dream11 the HR round is the last step, and it comes after the technical and managerial rounds are cleared. In the SDE-1 report the whole loop finished in about a week with one or two days between rounds, and the HR round was described as standard HR and culture fit questions. It is usually a short conversation with a recruiter or HR partner, roughly 30 to 45 minutes, and the final confirmation came about a week after the last round.

Dream11 HR interview questions with answers

5 of these 12 questions appear in public Dream11 interview reports; the rest are standard HR questions the company is known to ask.

1. Why are you looking for a change right now? (reported)

Why they ask: Recruiters open with this to hear your real reason and to check you are not running away from something you will repeat at Dream11.

How to answer: Give one honest, forward-looking reason, not a list of complaints. Tie it to what Dream11 offers, like scale of traffic or ownership of a product used by millions. Keep it under a minute and do not badmouth your current employer.

Sample answer: I have spent close to [X years] at [current company] and I have learned a lot there, but the scale of work has stayed roughly the same. I want to work on systems that handle real traffic spikes, like a live contest with millions of users at once. Dream11 is one of the few places in India where that problem is the daily job, so it felt like the right next step for me.

2. What interested you in this role and this team? (reported)

Why they ask: They want to know you applied with intent, not that you are spraying applications everywhere.

How to answer: Name something specific about the team or product you learned from the recruiter call or the job description. Connect it to work you have actually done. Avoid generic lines about the company being a market leader.

Sample answer: The recruiter mentioned this team works on [backend or frontend] for the contests platform. I have worked on [specific area, like payment flows or feed latency] and I enjoy that kind of problem where correctness and speed both matter. Dream11's product is used in a very short, high-pressure window during matches, and that constraint is what makes the engineering interesting to me.

3. What are your salary expectations? (reported)

Why they ask: They are checking whether your number fits the band before they invest more time, and whether you are realistic.

How to answer: Give a range, not a single number, and anchor it to your current fixed pay plus a reasonable hike. Ask about the full structure, fixed versus variable, since Dream11's offer has a variable component. Do not quote a number you would not actually accept.

Sample answer: My current fixed is [X] and I am expecting a hike in line with what SDE-2 roles pay in Mumbai, so somewhere around [Y to Z] fixed. I am flexible on the split between fixed and variable if the overall structure makes sense. Could you share the band for this level so we are working with the same numbers?

4. Are you comfortable relocating to Mumbai and working from the office? (reported)

Why they ask: The role is Mumbai-based and the onsite rounds happen there, so they need to know you will actually show up.

How to answer: Answer clearly, yes or no, and if yes, say what you have already thought through, like notice period, accommodation, or family. If you have constraints, state them now rather than after the offer.

Sample answer: Yes, I am fine with relocating to Mumbai. I have already looked at [area] for rent and I can move within [X weeks] of joining. My family is supportive of the move, so there is no dependency holding me back. I would just need the joining date confirmed a couple of weeks in advance to plan the shift.

5. What is your notice period and when can you join? (reported)

Why they ask: Dream11 hires against live team needs, so joining date affects whether they can slot you in.

How to answer: State your official notice period, then say what is negotiable. If you have buyout options or leave balance, mention it. Give a concrete earliest date instead of saying soon.

Sample answer: My notice period is [X days] as per my contract. I have [Y] days of leave balance that I can adjust, so realistically I can join by [date]. If the team needs me earlier, I can check with my manager about a buyout, but I would want to leave on good terms, so I would not want to promise less than [X weeks].

6. Walk me through your background and your current role.

Why they ask: This is the standard opener to set context and see if you can summarise yourself without rambling.

How to answer: Two minutes maximum. College, then each job with the one thing you owned, then why this role. Skip the full resume read, they have it in front of them.

Sample answer: I graduated from [your college] in [year] and joined [company] as a backend engineer. I have been there [X years] and my main work has been on [specific system, like the notifications service or the payments retry flow]. Before that I did an internship at [company] where I worked on [one line]. Outside work I do competitive programming occasionally, which is how I keep my DSA sharp.

7. Why should we hire you over other candidates?

Why they ask: They want a confident, specific pitch, not modesty and not arrogance.

How to answer: Pick two things you genuinely bring, one technical and one about how you work, and back each with a small example. Do not claim to be the best at everything.

Sample answer: Two things. One, I have actually owned a production system end to end, from the schema design to the on-call rotation, so I will not need hand-holding on the basics. Two, I am the person who writes things down, so when I debugged [specific issue] I left a runbook that the team still uses. I think that mix of shipping and cleaning up after yourself is what a team like this needs.

8. Tell me about a conflict you had with a teammate or manager and how you handled it.

Why they ask: Behavioural question to see if you can disagree without drama and still get the work done.

How to answer: Pick a real, low-stakes disagreement, ideally about a technical decision. Show that you listened, argued with data, and then committed to the final call even if it was not yours. Do not pick a story where you were clearly right and everyone else was wrong.

Sample answer: A teammate and I disagreed on whether to add a cache in front of [service]. I wanted to fix the query first, he wanted the cache. We wrote down both options with rough numbers and took it to our lead. The lead chose the query fix with a cache as a follow-up, and I did the query work. It turned out the query fix bought us enough headroom that the cache was not needed for months.

9. Where do you see yourself in three years?

Why they ask: They are checking whether your ambition fits the ladder at Dream11 and whether you will stay long enough to be worth hiring.

How to answer: Talk about depth in one area and growing into owning bigger pieces, not about jumping to management or starting a company. Keep it grounded in the role you are interviewing for.

Sample answer: In three years I want to be the person the team trusts with the hardest part of [domain, like the contest engine or the payments path]. I would like to have mentored a couple of juniors by then and to have shipped at least one system that I designed from scratch. I am not in a hurry to move into management, I would rather get genuinely good at the engineering first.

10. Do you have any questions for us?

Why they ask: This is scored. It shows whether you have thought about the job beyond the offer letter.

How to answer: Ask two or three real questions about the team, the on-call load, how performance is reviewed, or what the first 90 days look like. Avoid asking only about salary and leave in this round.

Sample answer: A few things. What does the first 90 days look like for someone joining this team? How is on-call split, and how often does the team get paged during a big match? And how does the review cycle work here, is it twice a year with clear levels? I would also like to know who I would report to and how big the team is right now.

11. Are you interviewing anywhere else, and do you have any offers in hand?

Why they ask: They use this to gauge how fast they need to move and how serious you are about Dream11.

How to answer: Be honest but do not oversell. If you have offers, say so without naming numbers you will not share. If Dream11 is your first choice, say it plainly, it helps them push your file faster.

Sample answer: I am in the process with [one or two companies] and I expect to hear back in the next couple of weeks. I do not have a written offer yet. Dream11 is genuinely my first choice because of the scale of the product, so if things move here I am happy to prioritise this.

12. Are you comfortable with the bond or service agreement and the background verification process?

Why they ask: They need to confirm you have read the terms and that your documents will clear verification.

How to answer: Ask them to walk you through the exact terms rather than agreeing blindly, then confirm you are fine with them. Keep your payslips, offer letters, and relieving letters ready. If there is anything unusual in your history, flag it now, not at the BGV stage.

Sample answer: I have not seen the exact terms yet, so could you walk me through what the agreement covers and for how long? As long as it is the standard notice and confidentiality stuff, I am fine with it. On documents, I have my offer letters, payslips, and relieving letters from [company] ready, and there is nothing unusual in my background that would cause a problem.
