At HCLTech the HR round is the final step, usually after the online assessment and the technical interview. Reports describe it as a short conversation, roughly 15 to 30 minutes, done virtually or in person, and it is mostly about your background, willingness to relocate, shift flexibility, and the service agreement. Some drives also put a voice or communication assessment or a group discussion before or around this stage, so treat it as a screening round and not a formality.

What the HCLTech HR round checks:

HCLTech HR interview questions with answers

Standard HR questions for HCLTech, with sample answers.

1. Tell me about yourself.

Why they ask: It is the opening question and sets the tone for the whole round.

How to answer: Keep it to about a minute. Cover your college or current role, one or two projects or skills, and why you are sitting in this HCLTech interview. Do not recite your resume line by line.

Sample answer: I am [your name], a [year] graduate in [your branch] from [your college]. During my final year I built [project name], where I handled [your part], and that is where I got comfortable with [skill]. I also did a short internship at [company or none] where I worked on [task]. I am looking for a role where I can learn on real projects, and HCLTech's training and project exposure is why I applied here.

2. Why do you want to join HCLTech?

Why they ask: They want to know if you actually chose the company or just applied everywhere.

How to answer: Mention one concrete thing about HCLTech, like its scale, its training program, or the technology work it does. Then connect it to what you want to learn. Avoid saying only that it is a big company.

Sample answer: I have spoken to seniors who joined HCLTech and they talked about the structured training before project allocation. That matters to me because I want a strong base before I specialise. HCLTech also works across so many domains, so there is a real chance to move into the area I care about, which is [your area]. That combination of training and scale is why it is my first choice.

3. Are you willing to relocate to any HCLTech location in India?

Why they ask: HCLTech places people across many centres and needs flexibility.

How to answer: Answer clearly. If you are open, say yes and name that you have no constraints. If you have a genuine constraint, state it once, calmly, and explain how you will manage it.

Sample answer: Yes, I am open to relocating. I have no dependents tying me to one city right now, and I see it as part of starting my career properly. My family is supportive of it. If the posting is in [city], I can join there on the given date without any issue.

4. Are you comfortable working in rotational shifts, including night shifts?

Why they ask: Many HCLTech projects run in shifts to support global clients.

How to answer: Be honest. If you can do it, say yes and mention you have thought about the routine. If you cannot, say so plainly rather than agreeing and backing out later.

Sample answer: Yes, I am comfortable with rotational shifts. I understand that client projects often run across time zones, and I have discussed this at home already. I have handled late study and project deadlines before, so adjusting my schedule is not a problem for me.

5. Are you okay with the service agreement or bond that freshers sign?

Why they ask: They want to confirm you understand the commitment before joining.

How to answer: Say you understand it and are fine with it. Do not negotiate the bond in the HR round. If you have a doubt about the terms, ask politely for the document so you can read it.

Sample answer: Yes, I am aware that freshers sign a service agreement, and I am fine with it. I see it as a two way commitment since the company invests in training me first. Could you share the exact terms and duration in writing so I can go through them properly before joining?

6. What are your salary expectations?

Why they ask: They are checking whether your number fits the band for your role and level.

How to answer: For a fresher, the offer is usually fixed, so say you are aligned with the standard package. If you are experienced, give a range based on your current CTC and say you are open to discussion.

Sample answer: For this role I am going by the standard package HCLTech offers at my level, so I am comfortable with that. What matters more to me right now is the kind of project I get and the learning in the first year. If there is a range, I am happy to work within it.

7. Do you have any other offers or are you in any other process?

Why they ask: They want to gauge how serious you are and how quickly you can join.

How to answer: Be truthful but brief. If you have another offer, say it without using it as leverage. Make clear that HCLTech is a serious option for you.

Sample answer: I am in one other process, but nothing is confirmed yet. I am not treating that as a backup plan. I applied to HCLTech because I want to start here, and if I get the offer I am ready to join on the date you give me.

8. Tell me about a time you worked in a team or handled a difficult situation.

Why they ask: They are checking behaviour and how you handle people, not your technical depth.

How to answer: Pick one real incident from college, an internship, or a project. Say what the problem was, what you did, and how it ended. Keep it under a minute and do not blame anyone.

Sample answer: In my final year project, two of us disagreed on the database design and we lost about a week. I suggested we list both options and test the simpler one first. We did that, it worked, and we finished the project on time. The main thing I took from it is that arguing costs more than just trying the cheaper option first.

9. What are your strengths and weaknesses?

Why they ask: A standard question to see if you are self aware and honest.

How to answer: Give one real strength with a small example, and one real weakness that you are actively working on. Do not use a fake weakness like working too hard.

Sample answer: My strength is that I finish what I start. When I picked up [skill], I stuck with it daily for three months until I could build something with it. My weakness is that I used to spend too long perfecting small things. I have started setting time limits for myself now, and it has made me faster without hurting the quality much.

10. Where do you see yourself in three to five years?

Why they ask: They want to hear a plan that fits a services company, not a plan to leave in a year.

How to answer: Talk about growing in the same organisation, getting strong on one technology, and taking more responsibility. Avoid saying you want to do an MBA or move abroad soon.

Sample answer: In three years I want to be solid in one technology area and handling my own modules without much hand holding. By five years I would like to be the person juniors come to on that project, and maybe mentoring new joiners. I would rather go deep in one place than keep switching.

11. Do you have any questions for us?

Why they ask: It shows whether you have thought about the role beyond getting selected.

How to answer: Ask one or two practical questions about training, project allocation, or the joining date. Do not ask about salary again or about leave policy at this stage.

Sample answer: Yes, two things. How is project allocation decided after training, and is there a chance to state a preference for a technology? And what is the expected joining timeline after the offer letter? I want to plan my documents and my move accordingly.
