Meta HR interview questions and answers

11 Meta HR interview questions with sample answers: why HR asks each one and how to answer. From public candidate reports. Free.

At Meta, the recruiter screen usually happens first and is mostly about your background, motivation and logistics, not deep coding. For many candidates a recruiter or HR partner also handles the later stages: confirming level, comp expectations, notice period, relocation and documents. It is typically a 30 to 45 minute call, and candidates report recruiter feedback arriving within days after each stage.

Meta HR interview questions with answers

1 of these 11 questions appear in public Meta interview reports; the rest are standard HR questions the company is known to ask.

1. Walk me through your development experience and the situations you had while collaborating with other teams. (reported)

Why they ask: They want a quick, honest read on your background and how you actually work with people, not a rehearsed pitch.

How to answer: Give a two minute arc: current role, main stack, one cross-team project and what you personally owned. Then stop and let them ask follow-ups. Keep it concrete, name the team and the outcome.

Sample answer: I am a [backend engineer] with [X] years, mostly [Java and Python] services. Right now I work on [payments at your current company]. Last year I led a change where [the mobile team] needed a new API from us. I set up weekly syncs, wrote the contract first, and we shipped in [six] weeks with no rollback. The part I owned was the API design and the migration plan.

2. Why Meta, and why this role right now?

Why they ask: They screen for genuine interest and whether you will actually join if an offer comes.

How to answer: Tie one specific thing about Meta's scale or product to something you have done. Avoid generic praise. Say what you want to learn and what you bring.

Sample answer: I use [Instagram] daily and I have worked on [feed ranking] at [your current company], so the scale problem is real to me. Meta ships to billions of users and the feedback loop is fast, which is what I miss in my current team. I want to work on [ranking or infra] at that scale, and I bring [three] years of production experience in exactly that area.

3. What are your compensation expectations?

Why they ask: They need a number to check against the band for your level before the loop goes further.

How to answer: Give a range, not a single number, and anchor it to your current total comp. Say base, bonus and equity separately if you can. If you are unsure, ask for the band for the level first.

Sample answer: My current total comp is around [X] lakhs, split as [base, bonus and stock]. For this move I am looking at a range of [Y to Z] lakhs total, and I am flexible on the mix between base and equity. Could you share the band for the level you have in mind, so we are aligned before the loop?

4. What is your notice period, and when could you join?

Why they ask: They plan headcount and interview slots around your start date.

How to answer: State your contractual notice period and the earliest realistic date. If you have leave you can use to shorten it, say so. Do not promise a date you cannot keep.

Sample answer: My notice period is [60] days. I have [10] days of unused leave, so I can bring it down to about [50] days if needed. If the offer comes by [mid-month], I can start by [first week of the following month]. I will confirm the exact date in writing once I resign.

5. Are you open to relocating to [Bangalore or Hyderabad] or to another Meta office?

Why they ask: They want to know if location will block the offer later.

How to answer: Answer directly. If you are open, say so and mention any constraints like family or notice. If you are not, say what you would need.

Sample answer: Yes, I am open to relocating to [Bangalore]. I have lived in [your current city] for [X] years, but my family is supportive and I can move within [a month] of joining. The only thing I would need is a bit of lead time to sort housing, which I can handle during the notice period.

6. Do you have any other offers or interviews in progress?

Why they ask: They use this to gauge urgency and to time the loop and offer.

How to answer: Be honest but do not inflate. If you have a deadline elsewhere, share the date. If not, say Meta is your priority.

Sample answer: I have one other process at [company] in the final round, and they have asked for a decision by [date]. Meta is my first choice, so if the loop goes well I would like to move quickly. I am not using that as pressure, just sharing the timeline so we can plan.

7. Tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate or a manager. How did you handle it?

Why they ask: Meta weighs collaboration and direct feedback heavily, and they want evidence you can disagree without breaking the team.

How to answer: Pick one real conflict, keep it short, and focus on what you did, not on who was wrong. End with the outcome and what you changed in your own approach.

Sample answer: At [your current company], my lead wanted to ship [feature A] without a rollback plan. I disagreed because we had [a bad incident] the previous quarter. I wrote a one page doc with the risk and a cheaper alternative, and we discussed it in the next standup. We shipped with a kill switch. It added [two] days but saved us from a repeat outage. I learned to bring data, not just opinion.

8. Where do you see yourself in three to five years at Meta?

Why they ask: They check whether your goals fit the level and the team, and whether you will stay.

How to answer: Be realistic for the level you are interviewing for. Talk about depth in one area and mentoring, not about jumping to management in a year.

Sample answer: In three years I want to be the person the team trusts on [your area, like ranking or infra], owning a service end to end. I also want to mentor [one or two] juniors, because I have done that informally and enjoyed it. Longer term I am open to a tech lead path, but I would rather earn it by shipping first.

9. Do you need any visa or work authorization support?

Why they ask: It affects which office and timeline they can offer you.

How to answer: State your current status plainly and what you would need. Do not guess about immigration rules; say you will confirm with the recruiter.

Sample answer: I am an Indian citizen and I do not need sponsorship for [Bangalore or Hyderabad]. If the role is in [London or the US], I would need visa support, and I would like to understand the timeline for that. I have a valid passport and no travel restrictions.

10. Are you comfortable with the on-call rotation and any shift requirements for this team?

Why they ask: They want to avoid a mismatch after joining, especially for infra and production roles.

How to answer: Say what you have done before and what you can commit to. If you have constraints, raise them now, not after the offer.

Sample answer: Yes. At [your current company] I was in a [one week in six] on-call rotation for [two] years, so I know what it involves. I am fine with the rotation and with occasional weekend pages. The only thing I would ask is that the team has a clear escalation path, which I am sure it does.

11. What questions do you have for me about the process or the team?

Why they ask: They read this as a signal of how much you have prepared and how seriously you take the role.

How to answer: Ask two or three specific things: team, level, loop structure, or how feedback is given. Avoid asking only about comp at this stage.

Sample answer: Two things. First, what does the loop look like after this call, and how soon should I expect feedback? Second, for the team I am being considered for, what does the first [six] months look like in terms of ownership? I want to know whether I would be on a new surface or an existing one.
