Ola HR interview questions and answers

11 Ola HR interview questions with sample answers: why HR asks each one and how to answer. From public candidate reports. Free.

At Ola the HR round is the last step, after the DSA and design rounds. In the on-campus SDE-1 process it was a 30 minute round, and for experienced hires it usually comes right after the technical and hiring manager rounds, sometimes the same day since Ola often tries to finish everything in one day. It is mostly run by an HR person or recruiter, and it is about your background, motivation, salary, notice period, relocation and documents, not coding.

What the Ola HR round checks:

The first question is always some version of "tell me about yourself". Write your self introduction for the interview (free, no signup).

Ola HR interview questions with answers

6 of these 11 questions appear in public Ola interview reports; the rest are standard HR questions the company is known to ask.

1. Why should we hire you? (reported)

Why they ask: They want to see if you can sell your fit in a few clear lines without overselling.

How to answer: Pick two or three things that actually match the role, like your stack, your project work or your ownership of a production system, and back each with one concrete example. Keep it short and do not list every skill you have. End by linking it to what the team needs.

Sample answer: I think I fit because I have spent the last [X years] building backend services in [your stack], and I have owned things end to end, from design to on-call. At [current company] I worked on [specific feature] which cut [some metric] and that is close to the kind of scale Ola works at. I also pick up new domains fast, and I am comfortable with the pace here. So I can contribute early without a long ramp up.

2. What do you know about this company? (reported)

Why they ask: They are checking whether you did basic homework or just applied to every opening.

How to answer: Know Ola's main businesses, like ride hailing, Ola Electric and the financial services arm, and one recent thing you read about them. Do not recite the website. Say what genuinely interests you about the work.

Sample answer: Ola started with ride hailing and now runs a much wider set of businesses, including Ola Electric and financial services. What interests me is the scale of the ride hailing platform, millions of trips a day, and the real time systems behind pricing, matching and payments. I also read about the push into electric vehicles and the charging network. That mix of consumer scale and hardware is unusual, and it is the kind of problem I want to work on.

3. Walk me through your background and current work.

Why they ask: This is the standard opener and they use it to set the tone and check your communication.

How to answer: Give a two minute version, not your whole resume. Cover education, current role, the kind of work you do and why you are looking to move. Keep it in order and do not jump around.

Sample answer: I did my B.Tech from [your college] and joined [current company] as a [role]. Right now I work on [team or product], mostly backend in [your stack]. My day to day is building services, handling releases and fixing production issues. Before this I worked on [one earlier project] which is where I learnt most of my system design basics. I am looking to move because I want to work at a bigger scale and closer to consumer facing products, which is why Ola interests me.

4. What is your biggest achievement till now? (reported)

Why they ask: They want one real example, not a list, to judge how you measure your own work.

How to answer: Choose something with a clear before and after, and say what your specific part was. If it was a team effort, say so, but do not hide your contribution. Keep it to under a minute.

Sample answer: The one I am most proud of is [project or feature] at [current company]. We had [specific problem, like slow checkout or frequent downtime], and I led the fix, which involved redesigning [the component] and adding proper monitoring. It took about [X weeks] and after that [the metric improved, for example latency dropped or errors fell]. What made it matter to me was that I drove it from the first discussion to production, and the team still uses that design.

5. Where do you want to see yourself in five years? (reported)

Why they ask: They are checking whether your plan fits a growing product company or if you will leave in a year.

How to answer: Be realistic and tie it to growth in the same kind of work. Saying you want to be a manager in two years as a fresher sounds off. Saying you want to be strong technically and own bigger systems sounds right.

Sample answer: In five years I want to be someone the team trusts with the harder problems, either as a senior engineer or leading a small area. I would like to have gone deep in one domain, probably [backend or platform or whatever fits], and to have mentored a few juniors along the way. I am not in a hurry to move into pure management, I would rather build the technical depth first and then decide. Ola has the scale for that kind of growth.

6. What is your biggest weakness? (reported)

Why they ask: They want honesty plus evidence that you are working on it, not a fake strength in disguise.

How to answer: Pick a real but not disqualifying weakness, and say what you are doing about it. Avoid cliches like perfectionism. One concrete habit change is enough.

Sample answer: Earlier I used to take on too much myself instead of asking for help, and it slowed the team down on a couple of releases. I noticed it during [specific project] when I was the bottleneck. Since then I make it a point to flag blockers in standup early and to split work with teammates instead of quietly struggling. It is still something I watch, but it has made my delivery much more predictable.

7. What did you do during the lockdown? (reported)

Why they ask: This is a common fresher question to see how you used unstructured time and whether you stayed productive.

How to answer: Answer honestly, whether it was study, projects, family responsibilities or a job hunt. Show one thing you finished or learnt. Do not pad it.

Sample answer: I was in my [final year or between jobs] then, so most of it went into [online coursework or a personal project]. I finished [specific course or project] and built [small app or tool] to practice what I was learning. I also helped at home since everyone was around all day. It was a slow period, but I made sure I came out of it with something to show, which is how I got ready for interviews.

8. Are you comfortable relocating to Bengaluru or working the shifts this role needs?

Why they ask: Ola hires centrally and roles are mostly in Bengaluru, so they want no surprises later.

How to answer: Give a straight yes or no, and if there is a constraint, say it now rather than after the offer. If you need time to move, say how much. Do not say yes if you cannot actually do it.

Sample answer: Yes, I am fine with relocating to Bengaluru. I would need about [two to three weeks] to wrap up things at my current place and move, but that is manageable. On shifts, I am comfortable with whatever the team follows, including on-call rotations, since I have done that before at [current company]. If there is anything specific about the schedule, I would like to understand it so I can plan properly.

9. What is your current and expected compensation?

Why they ask: This is the main purpose of the HR round and they are testing whether your number is workable.

How to answer: Know your current fixed pay and give a range, not a single figure. Anchor on your current package plus a reasonable hike, and mention any variable or bonus separately. If you are a fresher, refer to the standard band for the role.

Sample answer: My current fixed is [X] and with the variable it comes to about [Y]. I am looking for something in the range of [Z], which I think is fair for the role and my experience. I am flexible on the structure, so if a part of it is variable or stock, that is fine as long as the overall number works. I would rather get the fit right than argue over the last rupee.

10. What is your notice period and when can you join?

Why they ask: Ola often hires against a start date, so they need to know if you are immediately available or will take months.

How to answer: State your official notice period and your realistic joining date, and mention if it is negotiable. If you have an offer in hand, you can say so, but do not bluff about it.

Sample answer: My notice period is [30 or 60 or 90 days] as per my contract. I have not started serving it yet, but I can start right away once I sign, and I can try to get it reduced to [shorter period] if the team needs me sooner. Realistically I can join by [specific date]. If there is an urgent need, I am happy to discuss how we can work it out.

11. Do you have any questions for us?

Why they ask: They use this to see if you are actually thinking about the job or just ticking boxes.

How to answer: Ask two or three real questions about the team, the work or the process, not about salary since that was already covered. Avoid anything you could have googled in a minute.

Sample answer: Yes, a couple. What does the team I would join actually own, and what does the first three months look like for a new person? Also, how does the on-call and release process work day to day? And is there anything about my background you would like me to clarify before we close? I would rather clear that up now than leave you guessing.
