Zepto HR interview questions and answers

12 Zepto HR interview questions with sample answers: why HR asks each one and how to answer. From public candidate reports. Free.

At Zepto the HR round is the last step, after DSA and the LLD or HLD round, and candidates report it as short and light compared to the technical rounds. It is usually run by an in-house HR person or recruiter, sometimes the same recruiter who scheduled your earlier rounds, and typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. One candidate reported the HR round being cancelled after a month of rescheduling when the position closed, so treat the offer as real only after the discussion actually happens.

Zepto HR interview questions with answers

3 of these 12 questions appear in public Zepto interview reports; the rest are standard HR questions the company is known to ask.

1. As a fresher, how would you handle work pressure? (reported)

Why they ask: Quick commerce runs on tight delivery windows and this is the pressure question they ask most often, including to freshers.

How to answer: Give one real example of a deadline you handled, say what you did first, and end with what you learned. Do not say you never feel pressure. Mention prioritising, asking for help early, and finishing the critical piece before the nice-to-have.

Sample answer: In my final year project we had a demo in three days and our main feature broke. I split the work, fixed the data flow first because everything depended on it, and left the UI polish for the last night. I also told my teammate early instead of hiding it. We shipped on time. That is how I handle pressure, find the blocking piece, do that first, and speak up before it becomes a crisis.

2. Please explain your prior experience. (reported)

Why they ask: They want a short, clear walkthrough of what you have actually built so they can judge fit and level.

How to answer: Keep it to 90 seconds. Current role, main stack, one or two things you owned end to end, and why you are moving. Skip the full history from college unless you are a fresher.

Sample answer: I have been at [current company] for [X] months as a backend engineer. I work mostly in [Java or Node] with [Postgres or MySQL], and I own the [orders or payments] service. The thing I am proudest of is cutting [some API] latency by adding caching and fixing an N plus one query. Before that I interned at [company] on [work]. I want to move to Zepto because the scale and speed here are a different game.

3. What logical things can you do to attract more customers? (reported)

Why they ask: Reported from their HR round, they want to see whether you think about the business and not just code.

How to answer: Pick two or three concrete ideas tied to what Zepto already does, like faster delivery in dense areas, better substitution when an item is out of stock, or coupons that bring repeat orders. Explain the logic briefly, do not pitch a full strategy.

Sample answer: One thing is fixing substitutions. If milk is out of stock, the app should suggest the closest alternative at checkout instead of cancelling the item, because a cancelled item often means a cancelled order. Second, target coupons at people who ordered once and did not come back within two weeks, since that is cheaper than acquiring new users. Third, show realistic delivery times, because a promise you miss costs more trust than a slightly longer honest estimate.

4. What is your current CTC and what are you expecting?

Why they ask: Standard HR screening to see if your number fits their band before they move to offer.

How to answer: State your current fixed CTC honestly and give a range for expected, not a single number. Anchor the range on what the role pays in Bangalore for your experience, and say you are open if the overall package is right. Do not inflate your current salary, offer letters get checked.

Sample answer: My current fixed is [X] lakhs plus [Y] in variable. For this move I am looking at [A] to [B] lakhs fixed, based on the SDE [level] range in Bangalore and the fact that this is a switch. If the overall package and the role are right, I am flexible on the exact split. I would rather discuss the number once we both feel the fit is there.

5. How soon can you join and what is your notice period?

Why they ask: Zepto hires fast and often wants people in within a few weeks, so your notice period directly affects their decision.

How to answer: Give your exact notice period and the earliest realistic joining date. If you can buy out the notice or have leave to serve it, say so clearly. Do not promise a date you cannot keep.

Sample answer: My notice period is [60] days as per my contract, but I have [10] days of leave pending, so I can realistically join in about [45] days. If it helps, I can ask for an early release and buy out the rest. I will confirm the exact date in writing once we agree on the offer, so there is no confusion later.

6. Are you comfortable with the Bangalore office and the shift timings?

Why they ask: They want to confirm you will actually show up and are not going to quit over location or hours.

How to answer: Answer directly about relocation and working hours. If you need a specific shift, say it now, not after joining. For a quick commerce role, expect some weekend or late coverage and be honest about whether you can do it.

Sample answer: I am based in [city] and I am ready to relocate to Bangalore, I have already looked at areas near the office. On shifts, I am fine with the standard hours and with occasional weekend coverage during peak days. What I would want to understand is how the on-call rotation works, because I want to plan around it honestly rather than commit and then struggle.

7. Why do you want to leave your current company?

Why they ask: They are checking whether you are running away from something or moving toward something, and whether you will stay here.

How to answer: Keep it forward looking. Talk about scale, ownership or learning that you do not get now. Never badmouth your manager or company, that reads as a risk.

Sample answer: I have learned a lot at [current company] but the systems are small and I have stopped growing technically. At Zepto the order volume and the ten minute delivery promise mean real problems around inventory, routing and peak traffic. That is the kind of scale I want to work at. It is not about leaving, it is about where I can get better faster.

8. Do you have any questions for us?

Why they ask: They use this to see if you have thought about the role and the company seriously.

How to answer: Ask two or three specific questions about the team, the on-call setup, or how performance is measured in the first six months. Avoid asking only about salary and leave in this round.

Sample answer: Yes, a few. Which team would I be joining and what does the service own end to end? How does the on-call rotation work for that team? And in the first six months, what would a good engineer look like to you, what would make you say this hire worked out? I am asking because I want to know what I am walking into, not just the title.

9. Tell me about yourself.

Why they ask: It is the opener in almost every HR round and sets the tone for the rest of the conversation.

How to answer: Two or three sentences on your education and current work, then one line on a project you are proud of, then why Zepto. Keep it under a minute and a half and leave room for them to ask follow ups.

Sample answer: I am [name], I graduated from [your college] in [year] and I have been working as a [backend or full stack] engineer at [company] for [X] months. Most of my work is on [service or feature], and recently I [one concrete thing you did]. Outside work I [one honest line, like follow cricket or read]. I applied to Zepto because the delivery scale here is far bigger than anything I have worked on.

10. What are your salary expectations for this role?

Why they ask: Same as the CTC question but asked separately when the recruiter wants a clean number for the offer approval.

How to answer: Give a range with your fixed expectation first, then mention that you are open on the variable and joining bonus split. If they push for one number, give the top of your range and justify it with your current package and the level.

Sample answer: For the fixed component I am looking at [A] to [B] lakhs. My current fixed is [X], so that is a reasonable jump for a switch at this level. I am flexible on how the rest is split between variable and joining bonus. If the role and team are right, I am not going to lose the offer over a small gap, but I would like the fixed to be at the upper end of that range.

11. Are you interviewing anywhere else and do you have any offers in hand?

Why they ask: They want to know how fast they need to move and how serious you are about Zepto.

How to answer: Be honest but do not overplay it. If you have other processes running, say so without naming names, and give a rough timeline. Do not bluff about an offer you do not have.

Sample answer: I am in the middle of two other processes, both at the same stage as this one, and I expect to hear back in the next two weeks. I do not have a written offer yet. Zepto is high on my list because of the scale, so if things move here I am happy to prioritise it, but I cannot hold the others forever.

12. Will you sign a service agreement or bond if required?

Why they ask: Some quick commerce and product firms ask about bonds or retention clauses, and they want to know your reaction before drafting the offer.

How to answer: Ask what the terms are before agreeing to anything. If there is a bond or clawback on a joining bonus, get the duration and amount in writing. Do not say yes to something you have not read.

Sample answer: I am open to discussing it, but I would want to see the terms first, the duration and what exactly triggers it. If it is a joining bonus with a twelve month clawback, that is normal and I am fine with it. A long bond with a large penalty is something I would want to think about. Can you share the clause in the offer so I can read it properly?

What candidates report about the Zepto HR round

HR round position in the process. Candidates report the HR round comes last, after DSA and the LLD or HLD round, and is short compared to the technical rounds.

Who conducts it. Usually an in-house HR person or the recruiter who scheduled your earlier rounds, not the hiring manager.

Business awareness question. Reported from their HR round: they ask what logical things you could do to attract more customers, so prepare a couple of concrete product or retention ideas.

Fresher pressure question. Reported: freshers are asked how they would handle work pressure.

Scheduling risk. One candidate reported the HR or HM round being rescheduled repeatedly for a month and then the position closing, so keep other options alive until you have a written offer.

Offer timelines. Commonly reported for similar quick commerce firms, not confirmed for Zepto: feedback comes within a day or two after each round and offers move fast once the final round clears.
